Center for Well-being of Africans in America

The Center for Well-being of Africans in America (CWAA) is a research-based non-profit organization focused on the following key areas:
  • Investigating the well-being of African immigrants and refugees in America, an understudied sub-minority population.
  • Pioneering culture-relevant evidence-based social, behavioral and biobehavioral studies to enable prevention and intervention programs.
  • Pioneering programs leading to the development of sustained relocation adjustment and coping skills without loss of cultural distinctiveness; this is critical in successful assimilation and integration of African immigrants and refugees in America.
  • Collaborate with other entities in research efforts directed at increasing cultural competency among healthcare and social service professionals, particularly as it relates to our target population.

To achieve these aims, CWAA partners with academic institutions, local governments, communities and other organizations with shared interests.

Statement on Statistics

Getting statistical data segregated by ethnic groups has been a challenge and most often an impossible task when looking for data pertaining to African refugees, the newly emerging group of Africans in America. This target group is often categorized as African American immediately upon arrival into the United States, making it very difficult to track progress. This has led to delays in identification of pressing needs and common problems experienced by this newly emerging sub population of blacks in America. It would be cost effective and advantageous for city, county and government agencies to look into segregating this data of newly arrived African refugees from the existing data of African Americans.
