Empowering East African Parents
A Pilot Community-Based Participatory Research Project

Why this project?

The project seeks to examine a serious cultural divide between East African parents and their children and reduce the likelihood of East African youths dropping out of school, getting involved in gangs, youth violence or any other social groups bearing negative influences.  In recent years, there has been a consistent increase in reports and documentation of East African youth involvement with both juvenile and criminal court systems. Parents are concerned and it is time we sit together and share our experiences and identify any common themes that may aid us in finding targeted solutions.

Who can participate?
Center for Well-being of Africans in America (CWAA) and the Seattle Public Schools' Office of Family and Community Partnerships (OFCP) are inviting East African parents with school-age children (ages 8 and older) to participate in a community discussion. We are interested in hearing about parents' experiences with their children. These discussions will take place in small groups of 8 to 10 parents called focus groups.

What is the goal?
The purpose of these focus groups is to gather information so that we can better understand the experiences and challenges faced by East African parents in the United States. We hope the information we find out will help us develop a culturally appropriate program that will give parents parents of Eastern Africa descent tools for meeting the challenges they face in raising their children in the US. The information shared will be a valuable investment in the community's current and future generation of East African parents and their kids. Trained focus group leaders will be leading the focus group in participants' native languages.

CWAA and OFCP are determined to evaluate and foster positive parenting experiences among East African parents.

We are currently recruiting participants for focus groups in your neighborhood!
