A Quick Glance

Most data describing characteristics of members of the black community in the US is not segrageated by place of birth, i.e., African-born vs US-born, thus making it difficult to assess the progress and quality of life of foreign born blacks, especially, recently arrived refugees. Information herein attempts to assess the number African immigrants and refugees as a subpopulation of blacks in America. Data is from Census 2000 database from the US Census Bureau.

  • Subsaharan Africans constitute about 0.6% of the US population and about 0.5% in the State of Washington.
  • Within the State of Washington, King county has the highest percentage of Sub-Saharan Africans, 1.1%.
  • The city of Seattle has the largest population of African born blacks.
